Believe or not, your credit score is not always as important as you may believe. However, seeing how much additional debt you will be paying in addition to the rent and utilities (if applicable) could be a red flag.
Landlords and Property Managers want to make sure that:
1) You will care for and respect their property. So good references are super important. Good tip: invite them for a meet and greet at your current home before signing the lease. Or a zoom call for your prescreening. 2) Landlords want to make sure you are going to make rent payments on time and in full. Proof of steady income and good employment references are key. Watch for late payments on other bills, loans as they will affect where you stand against other applications.
3) They look at the little things. Are you a clean and responsible person. Did you arrive in time for the showing? Dress nice and look clean when viewing a rental. If you look like you just rolled off of the couch and haven’t washed your hair in a week. I’m pretty sure that is a big red flag on how clean you keep your apartment.
Be open and honest about issues that may come to light in your credit and background checks. Honesty, is very important in building a good report with the landlord or rental agent.
